Friends of Necedah National Wildlife Refuge

The friends of Necedah National Wildlife Refuge is a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to providing time and funds to support the many activities of the refuge.  As volunteers, we give over 10,000 hours each year to refuge activities and projects and every dollar we earn is returned to fund those projects.

Ellen Allen Discovery Center

Children in the outdoor classroom at the Necedah National Wildlife RefugeWhen the new Visitor Center opened in 2011, the Ellen Allen classroom needed to be razed. We envisioned a new outdoor classroom at the site to give the many families who visit the refuge another opportunity to learn about nature and the environment.

In 2018, we began to put that vision in motion by using the proceeds from our silent auction program as a starting point. Refuge guests were able to bid on wildlife art donated and framed by Friends members Tom and Shirley Horner. With those proceeds we were able to build two seat walls and a bear claw sand area for presentations and fun.

In the next phase we laid out a trail system and locations for interactive signs to educate and entertain our many guests. The refuge staff spent many hours on the project developing a parking area and links to the Whitetail and the Observation trails as well as clearing and removing downed trees and other debris.

We received a grant from the Green Bay Packer Foundation to build a ground-level eagles’ nest that guests can climb inside and add sticks to continue “building the nest.” In addition, the Horners donated a carved eagle to enhance the experience.

Plans include a prairie discovery area, an interactive water feature to showcase the water flow of the 1920’s ditches and newly restored Little Yellow River and more education signage along the trails. The Allen Discovery Center is just east of the Visitor Center and already has a path installed.

All this work wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of many donors.  To continue the vision, we are asking for your support. Please send your check to Friends of NNWR, N11385 Headquarters Rd., Necedah, WI 54646.
